AIRSHOWS

This page was last updated on 10/16/2007

Everyone thrills to the sights and sounds of an airshow.  Death-defying acts of piloting and bravery mixed with showmanship and a carnival atmosphere make the airshow one of the great American summer-time traditions.

But split-second flight decisions occasionally go awry.  These videos capture what happens when an airshow performance goes wrong.

New 10/16/07   Aerial Circus Gone Bad  Contributed by Ronald Shoemaker. The best we can make of this clip is that it's a reenactment of a flying circus in the Czech Republic.  Anyone know the details?

Aerobatics Championship  Filmed in Japan, this is the most incredible video of aerobatics ever filmed.  (It's a HUGE download, so be patient.)
Aerobatics Display   A terrific video of an aerobatics demonstration by Kirby Chambliss.
Airplane Taxies Into Car  Every airshow pilot's worst nightmare happens when this classic World War II tail-dragger is taxied right into a parked car.
Alexander Krotov's 2001 Crash   This crash occurred while Krotov was practicing for an FAI aerobatic competition in France.   Incredibly, he survives, only to crash again in 2003!  Generously contributed by Crashman.
Alexander Krotov's 2003 Crash   This crash occurred in Japan on October 31, 2003, during practice for an aerobatic exhibition.   Again, miraculously, Krotov survived.   Click here to read about this crash and Krotov's recovery.   Kindly contributed by Crashman.
AT-6 Harvards on Water   In a remarkable display of piloting, these World War II trainers are flown "feet wet" -- literally -- in formation.

At last, we've found the source of this amazing video, with thanks to Peter Wakeman:

"Early morning anglers (were) treated to the spectacle of four T6 Harvard Aircraft from The Flying Lions Aerobatic Team water skiing across the Klipdrift Dam near Johannesburg South Africa.  Lead by Scully Levin, with wingmen Arnie Meneghelli, Stewart Lithgow and Ellis Levin, this renowned air show display team rehearse(d) a sequence for the newly launched 'Aviation Action' television program on Supersport."

"Arnie Meneghelli from Academy Brushware, owner of the aircraft, had this to say: 'What we did today I believe is a world first. It illustrates that South African air show pilots are amongst the best in the world.'  This unusual act, approved by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), and supported by Castrol Aviation, was meticulously planned and took place under the watchful eye of divers and paramedics that were on site."

Bad Landing!   This steep approach to landing demonstration goes badly awry.

The aircraft in this video is an Alenia G222TCM of the Italian Air Force.  For more details, see: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/2140758.stm  and http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1050624/L/

Barrel Roll Into the Ground   This T-6 performs a low-level barrel roll in front of an airshow crowd in Lafayette, Louisiana that ends very badly.
BiPlane Crash  Maneuvers at an airshow in San Marcos end very badly.   Click here to read the National Transportation Safety Board's report regarding this fatal crash.
Bob Hoover Flight Demo -- The one, the only, Bob Hoover.  This site has been incomplete without a video of "The One's" piloting prowess.  Having had the pleasure of seeing this routine many times, I can vouch for the fact that NO ONE flies -- or has flown -- like Mr. Hoover.   See it for yourself!
Commuter Plane Demo Crash A flight demonstration of a super STOL deHavilland DCC-5D goes terribly awry...
Commuter Plane Demo Crash 2 A different angle of the same turboprop crash.
Commuter Plane Demo Crash 3  Yet another video of this famous crash.
Comment Provided By a Knowledgeable Viewer: Both videos, above, show the crash of a deHavilland DHC-5 Buffalo aircraft.  The crash shown took place at a Farnborough airshow sometime in the 80's, and involved deHavilland's factory demonstrator aircraft.  This airplane was not actually a "commuter" plane, rather it was a military STOL transport (although painted in civilian colors for the show as part of an ill-fated marketing effort).  The pilot was flying the routine with a substantial tailwind.  The tailwind contributed to him misjudging the turn onto final for his STOL landing, allowing the plane to get too slow, with the result that he was unable to raise the nose and flare for the landing.  Amazingly, no one was hurt.

Yes, the pilot was fired.

Click here to read a detailed analysis of this accident, written by Jim Watson, a pilot who rode this very plane as a cockpit jumpseat observer just two days before the crash..
F-4 Phantom II Crash  News footage of a formation flyover that ends badly.
F-86 Between the Light Poles!   Contributed by Tom Moore.  Tom's comments:: "I videotaped the Friday work-up from show center for last year's (2006) 'Heritage Flight' demo at Tyndall.  Snodgress  (the F-86 pilot) blew me away with his low opposing pass while other formation aircraft were landing.   A few pilots were outside and I said something about how low the F-86 was on the last pass; they told me he flew between the light towers and that flying like that he would eventually kill himself and hopefully nobody else. I did not believe he was that low coming in for the pass and actually flew between the light towers."

"Luck was with me Saturday; I ran into a bud that agreed to video tape his 'approach' Sunday, which is what you see. This same pilot came back this year for Tyndall's 2007 Air Show and though he didn't fly between the towers this time he dipped his right wing during a low pass during the work-up; we did not see any air between his wingtip and the ground; some folks watching with me almost became hysterical (screaming). Again, the pilots there said the same thing...he is going to kill himself sooner or later and hopefully nobody else.  Is it true he was the pilot of the F-14 that was photographed 90 degrees right roll off the port side of an aircraft carrier?"

Here's the definitive answer to Tom's question:

Yes, it is the same guy.

The son of a test pilot, Captain Dale Snodgrass retired 6/1/99 after 26 years of naval service.  Dale's Navy career highlights include: first Flight School Graduate to be selected for F-14 Tomcat training, first non-fleet experienced pilot to carrier qualify in the F-14 both day and night, 12 operational Fighter Squadron/Wing tours including command of Fighter Squadron 33 during Desert Storm and command of all the Navy's F-14s.

As Commander Fighter Wing Atlantic, he was selected as the Navy's Fighter Pilot of the Year in 1985.  As a Top Gun graduate, he was selected by Grumman Aerospace as Topcat of the Year or best F-14 Pilot in 1986.  He's the highest time F-14 Pilot with 5000 hours in the Tomcat, 7800 hours in fighters and 10,000 hours total, including 1287 carrier arrested landings.  He led 34 missions in Desert Storm as overall Strike or Fighter Lead.

He was the F-14 Tomcat Flight Demonstration Pilot 1985-1997. Dale's military decorations include: Legion of Merit (3) for superior performance in positions of great responsibility, Bronze Star for Leadership and Valor during Desert Storm, Meritorious Service Medal (2) for exceptional service in a position of senior leadership, Air Medal (3) for Valor during Desert Storm, Navy Commendation Medal (3) for Valor during Desert Storm, numerous Campaign Medals and Service Ribbons.

Dale's air show and aviation highlights: Surface Solo and Formation Aerobatic qualification in the F-14 Tomcat, F-86 Sabre, Mig 15/17, P-51 Mustang, F4-U Corsair, T-6/SNJ Texan and 8KCAB Super Decathlon; 14 Years and over 600 low level performances.

F-86 Sabre Crash   Filmed at El Toro's annual air show, this film shows a high speed pass by a classic Korean War-vintage F-86 Sabre that goes terribly wrong.
F/A-18 High Speed Pass -- Filmed at the 2005 Cleveland Air Show, this video shows a Hornet producing a a Prandtl-Glauert condensation cloud (like this one at : http://fluidmech.net/tutorials/sonic/f18-clouds.jpg ) For technical data about this effect, see: http://fluidmech.net/tutorials/sonic/prandtl-glauert-clouds.htm
FAI World Grand Prix    Fantastic video footage of the 2005 aerobatics competition held in Lausanne, Switzerland.
New 9/27/07   Fat Albert!   Everyone loves "Fat Albert" -- the US Marine Corps' Lockheed C-130 that serves as support ship for the US Navy's Blue Angels flight demonstration team.  Filmed and contributed by Stephen Gresser in 2006, this video shows just how remarkably maneuverable and versatile the C-130 is when expertly flown.  (Note: You'll need Quicktime to view this .mp4 video.)
Frecce Tricolori Crash  This terrible 1988 crash of the Italian Air Force's precision flight team resulted in many changes to flight team and air show procedures around the world..
Harrier Ejection!  A demonstration at the Lowestoft Seafront Air Festival goes very badly.  The pilot ejects, and then breaks his ankle landing right on top of his crashed aircraft.  (Luckily it was an over-water mishap, or he would have landed right in the fireball...)   Click here to read the RAF's official accident report.

Louisville F-22 Demo   Contributed by Steve Giese.  Steve says: "The air show in Louisville is the kick-off event of the Kentucky Derby Festival. The 2007 air show started suddenly when this F-22 Raptor came whizzing through. It performed these two sharp turns then departed. These turns were of such a narrow radius that none of the other planes throughout the day matched them...even the A-10. It was also the loudest of all the jets that performed throughout the day."
Malta MidAir   A Yak 55 participating in the Aero GP event in Marsamxett collides with an Extra 200, and the Yak crashes into the sea near the entrance to the harbor in Valletta, Malta.  Swedish pilot Gabor Vargas was killed, while Irish pilot Eddie Goggins was uninjured.
ME-262 Over Berlin!    Here's a sight no one has seen in over 60 years -- a Messerschmitt ME-262 jet fighter flies in a 2006 airshow in Berlin, Germany!  Not a restoration, but a brand-new aircraft, this terrific video is very long -- but worth the download.   (Click here to read all about the amazing project to build new versions of the first successful jet fighter.)
Motorcycle Jump Airshow performer Skip Stewart flies his high performance bi-plane UNDER a motorcycle -- that is jumping OVER him!  Incredible!
P-38 Lightning Start-up  Taken at the 2005 Quad City Airshow, in Davenport, Iowa, Porky II, owned by the Planes of Fame museum, starts up as an F4U Corsair taxies past.
P-38 Airshow Crash  An awful crash of a true American classic warbird.  This accident occurred in the United Kingdom during the July 1996 Duxford Airshow.  The fatal roll was part of the display sequence, but it continued for more rotations than planned.  The British AAIB could not find any mechanical reason for the crash, but speculated that a temporary obstruction of the controls by an object in the cockpit may have been to blame.  Read the complete report here: http://www.aaib.gov.uk/publications/bulletins/may_1997/lockheed_501731.cfm
P-38 Lightning Fly-by  Filmed at the 2005 Quad City Airshow, Porky II, from the Planes of Fame Museum, does a high speed fly-by...
Plane vs Helicopter   Another example of how NOT to taxi your aircraft in tight quarters...
Red Bull Pylon Strike   This video shows a race plane clipping a (thankfully inflatable) pylon.  If you've never seen one of these races, they are worth the effort to attend.  Contributed by Chris Dehmel.
Russian Air Show Crash  A bit too low on the bottom of the loop...
Sean D. Tucker At Work   This 2005 video, filmed at a private airshow by the good folks at www.3DBatix.com , shows why Tucker is *the* best airshow pilot in the world today!
Spitfire Crash  A Supermarine Spitfire is destroyed at the bottom of a misjudged loop.
Sukhoi Crash  The runway needed to be just a bit lower to make this loop work.
Sukhoi Sorensen Disaster  One of the most horrific airshow crashes in history.
Sukhoi SU-27 Crash in Detail   This remarkable footage shows the Sorensen disaster (above) from several different angles -- including two that were filmed frighteningly close to the impact point.
SR-71 Record Setter  A Lockheed video showing the preparation for and execution of several record-setting flights, followed by the flight into the Farnborough air show back in 1974.  Contributed by James Axelrad.
SR-71 Speed Record at Farnborough   This video shows the pilots and plane that set the (still standing) New York to London, and London to Los Angeles speed records, as it made appearances at the Farnborough airshow in 1974. Contributed by James Axelrad.
Supersonic DeHavilland 110   This video shows British test pilot John Derry breaking the "sound barrier" at the Farnborough Air Show, shortly before his fatal crash that killed over 30 spectators.   (With many thanks to a loyal viewer, who kindly converted this video to .mpeg4 format from the original RealPlayer format.)
Thunderbird Crash  An external view of the Air Force Thunderbird crash at Mountain Home, Idaho in the fall of 2003. The pilot ejected successfully less than one second before impact.
Thunderbird Crash from Inside the Cockpit!  Remarkable footage from within the cockpit of the Air Force Thunderbird crash at Mountain Home, Idaho in the fall of 2003.
Too Many Gs  A graphic illustration of what can happen when you pull too many Gs...

Under the Bridge!  As part of the Red Bull air race series, pilot Jurgis Kairys flies an aerobatic Sukhoi INVERTED under the Neris River bridge in Kaunas, Lithuania in 2001.  You won't see THIS in the United States.
Under the Bridge 2!   Yes, just when you think no one else would do this, you discover you're wrong.   Here's the story, contributed by the pilot's ground assistant, Amedeo Zigon:

"This is just a small part of an under the bridge fly-by video, flight by my friend: Date is July 14, 2006 (08:15 PM local time), location Solkan (Slovenia), aircraft is a  Zlin 526-F, pilot Benjamin "Benjo" Licer (over 8000 hrs of flying on airshows and stunt flights)."

"The stunt was made to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Solkan Bridge. Despite a thunderstorm at the time of the show and winds up to 40 knots, Benjo did a fantastic job.  He has also obtained a special permit from the authorities to do the flight just for that time."

Under the Bridge 2.5!   This is a much longer version of "Under the Bridge 2", above, with many thanks to Amedeo Zigon.
