The Apollo Suite
Apollo.
For centuries the name brought to mind the Greek God of the Sun, but for
Americans during the 1960s, Apollo meant the race to the moon. From
1963 to 1972, NASA created a transportation system that could take Americans
to the surface of the moon and bring them safely back to Earth. The
name of this system was Project Apollo.
The goal was
to beat the Soviet Union -- leaders in the "space race" till that point --
to the moon. To that end eleven Apollo missions were flown, with six
of them landing on the moon. From 1969 to 1972, twelve Americans stood
on the moon's surface, gazing back at our tiny blue marble, floating in the
inky blackness of space: Earth.
This national
effort cannot be underestimated. The Apollo program absorbed the
imagination, scientific output, and efforts of an entire generation of
Americans. The Saturn V rocket that carried three astronauts and all
their equipment into orbit was the largest operational launch vehicle ever
produced. Standing over 363 feet tall, it produced 7.5 million pounds
of thrust at lift-off, and produced the second-loudest sound ever heard on
Earth. (The loudest being made by the hydrogen bomb tests.)
And
it was the swinging '60s! The Beatles were on the radio, and it was
the era of hippies and silly TV shows like 'Bewitched' and 'The Munsters'.
The post-war Baby Boom was in full swing, times were good, and it seemed
that America could do just about anything...
Our 400
square foot Apollo Suite echoes those "can-do-anything" 1960s, with decor to
match. Most of the artwork was obtained during our 2004 visit to the
Kennedy Space Center in Florida, but several remarkable items of memorabilia
have been donated by Jim Weir, a young engineer during the Apollo program.
It's not all
'60s, though! Your suite sports 21st century amenities like a separate
King-sized bedroom, a Jacuzzi hot tub, microwave, refrigerator, 10-cup
coffee maker, hide-a-bed couch, bagel toaster, plus our delivered to your
suite continental breakfast each morning!
