The Barnstormers Suite

Step back in time to the Golden Age of Flight, when men were men, and airplane rides were a dollar!

The Barnstormers Era was the most romantic age of flight, made possible by a unique confluence of events. Take a bunch of World War I surplus planes, throw in some adventuresome pilots, factor in practically NO rules or regulations, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster – or the Barnstormers!

The decade of the 1920s provided all the ingredients for this amazing era to flourish, and flourish it did. From 1920 to 1929, pilots like Jimmy Angel, Roscoe Turner, Charles Lindbergh, and Pancho Barnes demonstrated aerobatics, hawked rides, and performed in air shows, flying from farm to farm throughout the United States. Here’s how it worked: First, fly low over a small, rural town to attract attention. Land in a nearby pasture and negotiate with the farmer (hence the name “Barnstorming”) for the use of his temporary runway. Buzz the town again, drop handbills, and gather a crowd. Sell rides and perform aerobatics by day, sleep under the wing by night, repeat until the town-folk “ran dry” – then move on to the next town.

At their peak of popularity, troops of barnstormers called “Aerial Circuses” could shut entire towns down for days, as nearly every inhabitant came out to see the show. Alas, by 1927 a series of highly publicized accidents resulted in stricter regulations, and the Stock Market Crash of 1929 signaled the end of the Barnstormers Era. To this day, however, some pilots still spend a portion of each summer hawking rides around the countryside, flying some of the original biplanes and keeping the Barnstormer’s creed alive.

Our Barnstormers Suite pays homage to these magnificent men and their flying machines – but you don’t have to sleep under the wing! This pet-friendly 440 square foot one-bedroom suite boasts a full kitchen, breakfast bar, pull-out sleep-sofa in the living room, and a two-person, 84 gallon Jacuzzi hot tub! In the morning we will bring fresh bakery items, fruit, coffee, tea, and the morning newspaper – right to your suite.

Starting at just $104.95 per night!
