2004 Leaf Peeper Pix

Every autumn we do a "leaf peeper flight" over the forests and rivers of the Midwest, in search of the best fall colors.

One of our favorite flights is up the Mississippi River valley, from north of Savannah, Illinois to LaCrosse, Wisconsin.  This flight takes us past the confluence of the Wisconsin and Mississippi rivers, where 600-foot bluffs allow the late afternoon sunlight to really highlight the reds and golds of autumn.

On October 10th, we took the following photos.   Interestingly, (probably due to the relatively warm water), the trees on the islands had not yet changed, while the ones up on the bluffs were blazing in peak fall colors.

Approaching the Mississippi...

Fall colors offset by a thin sliced farmer's field...

The tiny Cassville, WI airport soldiers on....

Another view of the Cassville airport...

600 foot bluffs overlook the river of Mark Twain...

Mississippi backwaters -- terrific for canoeing...

A shot looking downriver...

Islands in the Mississippi....

Mirror-like water reflect the trees...

A Mississippi lock and dam helps to control flooding...

A real paddle-wheeler plying the Big Muddy...

A river barge chugs upstream...

The shadows growing deeper....

Nice colors...

As speedboaters enjoy the day...

Another shot looking upstream...

The town of Prairie du Chein, where we stopped for brunch...

Yes, that's my kids with a pink elephant in Prairie du Chein, WI.

Joe looking stoic in the back seat...after hundreds of hours, the back seat is pretty dull for him...
