2005 Soaring in Ames
For months, our friend, John, had been bugging us to try soaring. As powered-pilots, the thought of flying without an engine was a daunting one -- but at last he won us over and our day in Ames, Iowa, flying with Paul from the Silent Knights Soaring Club, was set.
A high overcast presented nearly perfect flying conditions -- and poor soaring conditions. As a result, we were towed up to 3,000 feet and let loose, where we slowly, inexorably lost altitude, with no natural lift to be found.
Still, although the conditions were not optimal, the experience of silent flight was marvelous, and we can't wait to do it again!
