2008 Florida Trip

Go to Day 2

From Sunday, March 16 through Saturday, March 22, 2008, we lived like gypsies, flying where the weather was nicest, spreading the "religion" of our aviation themed hotel and enjoying the sunshine.

Our intention was to visit our only competition in the aviation-themed hotel market, the "Hangar Hotel" -- but for the third straight year the weather prevented this from happening.   No worries -- we simply broke out "Plan B" -- Rebecca's "Spring Vacation #2" -- and headed for Pensacola, FL first, rather than last!

For the first time in 18 years we did a family trip without Joe, who was on a school-sponsored two-week trip to Spain.  Rebecca had the whole back seat of the plane to herself, and made the most of it!   We met Jim, Tami, Nick and Megan Burns (who flew their Aztec down from Wisconsin) in Florida to spend a few days in the sunshine with them, and had a wonderful time!

Best part -- with a wonderful tailwind, we were able to make the entire flight in just a hair over five hours.  When we took off the temperature was a bit above freezing; when we landed, it was nearly 80.

Here are some pictures from the trip.

Day 1 -- Flight to Pensacola

Bec in the truck, in our hangar -- let's go!

In flight -- on vacation!

First stop -- Bay-Minnett, GA for car gas and wonderful service!

Bay-Minnett's classic FBO -- with shirt-tails from past solo flights

Approaching Pensacola...

A little bit closer...

On final...

Short final...

Tami, Jim & Jay at McGuires Irish Pub, within crawling distance of our hotel!

The ceiling of McGuires has thousands of $1 bills, placed there by patrons...

Becca & Nick put their bills up on the ceiling!

It's an amazing sight!

Becca took this pic of Jay -- how many beers?
