Airline History Museum

On January 23, 2005 we flew to the Airline History Museum, located at Kansas City Downtown Airport (MKC), former home of Howard Hughes' TWA, in search of Lockheed Constellation artwork and memorabilia for our Constellation Suite.

We found it.

Located on the field, the museum has a Douglas DC-3 undergoing restoration, a Martin 404, and the queen of the prop-driven skies, a Lockheed Super Constellation.   Visitors are given a guided tour by dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers, and are given access through and around these grand old airliners.  They also have a terrific exhibit area and gift shop.

With the buildings of downtown looming close by, and TWA's old world headquarters building (with Howard Hughes' old office clearly visible) still in use (by a Beechcraft dealer), this airport is truly a time capsule to be cherished and enjoyed.  And the Airline History Museum is one museum we'll be back to visit again and again.

Preparing for a sunny -- but cold -- day's flight...

A small town nestles comfortably north of the snow line...

This is how close you can park your plane to the museum!

Looking the other direction, downtown is very close!

A slightly different view...

The museum's DC-3 is "about 2-years from flying"

The luxurious interior of a Martin 404

The 404s PA system really shows its age...

Although it purports to cover all airlines, TWA is obviously everyone's favorite

The Connie's huge nose...

And the beautifully restored interior...

The plane was undergoing recertification, so all access panels were open -- a real treat!

Another view of those gigantic radial engines...

The port wing...

An unusual view inside the tail cone of the connie -- looks like a big Cherokee...

A sad shot -- dozens of prop-liners awaiting the wrecking ball in the 1960s...

The majestic Boeing 377 in their glory years...

Departing Kansas City on Rwy 19 takes you right over downtown!

Those buildings sure look close while departing!
