Fire at 520 Ernest
On October 6, 2005, a fire broke out in a stair-well window sill between the second and third floors of our rooming house at 520 Ernest Street.
It was detected early, thanks to the smoke alarm systems working properly. Despite the tenants and manager's best efforts using a fire extinguisher, the fire -- apparently started by a cigarette left burning on the window sill -- had started to spread into the wall and insulation.
The Fire Department was called, and the fire -- roughly the size of a softball -- was extinguished by ripping the entire window and wall out. Thankfully, no one was injured, and damage was confined to the stairwell.
