Grumman Wildcat in KIOW
On September 1, 2006, a Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat, owned by Steve Craig, flew to Iowa City to participate in the rededication of Kinnick Stadium. The stadium, newly refurbished, was named after Nile Kinnick, a former Iowa football great who was killed while flying an identical Grumman Wildcat in World War II.
Click here to read the story of how this extremely rare aircraft was recovered from the bottom of Lake Michigan in 1991, forty-seven years after crashing while attempting to take off from the USS Wolverine.
Craig flew the beautifully restored Wildcat over the stadium during the rededication. Here are some pictures and two short videos of the aircraft.
