Prairie Aviation Museum

The Prairie Aviation  Museum's Ozark Air Lines DC-3 was this year's star of our annual "SERTOMA Fly-In Breakfast," held every August in Iowa City.   In exchange for crew lodging we received a couple of rides on board this fabulous old airliner, and truly enjoyed ourselves.

Before the crew departed they made sure to invite us to their museum, located an hour southeast of us, in Bloomington, Illinois. (KBMI)   We promised to come visit, someday.

Sunday, October 16, 2005, was *the* day.  Crisp, cool, with visibility so clear that only the curvature of the earth prevented us from seeing the skyscrapers of Chicago, we took off shortly after noon.  Thick, calm air made the flight utterly enjoyable, and Mary had us taxiing up to Image Air (the FBO) in just a hair over 60 minutes.

Holly, the terrific "GBTD"  (Girl Behind The Desk) at Image Air, had our car ready for us when we arrived.  Her recommended brunch destination, called "Le Peeps", was close by and marvelous, and we had a terrific breakfast.

We then drove back to the FBO, parked the car, and walked across the lot to the museum.  Admission was an economical $2 apiece, and the volunteers inside were wonderful.  Their museum is about the size of a standard ranch home, so there's not a lot of room for displays, and they are forced to keep their nice collection of warbirds outside in the unforgiving elements -- but they are working on funding a new indoor home for their planes.

Strangely, the DC-3 we flew in Iowa City is stored in a hangar far from the museum, and is not available for touring.  This seemed odd, given that it's the centerpiece of the museum -- but we soon got over that and enjoyed the place immensely.  If you get a chance, check them out -- it's truly a "fly-in museum!"

Here are some pix from that wonderful day.  (Check out that sky!)
