Bryan started building in October '98 and nearly 1500 hours later, completed construction in June of '04. First flight was on Labor Day 2004 and phase I testing was completed on March 6, '05. Engine is a Stratus Subaru. Top speed is about 120 mph without the wheel pants. The test flights were conducted out of Midland Barstow airport (3BS) in Michigan.  Bryan says that water cooling really comes in handy in Michigan, and that he can fly in the coldest weather and stay warm with hot water heat in the cockpit!

Added 3/6/05   Bob Noel -- 1973 Piper Cherokee 140 -- N56713

Located in Massachusetts, Bob is a prolific poster who has been on Usenet "since before the rec.aviation split" -- which is the Usenet equivalent of "before the dawn of time."   He's been flying since '87, earned his IR in '90, and bought his plane in '94.   Bob has spent a lot of time and money fixing up N56713 -- as he puts it, he doesn't know how much the overhaul cost because he "stopped keeping track of costs after the parts reached $23.5K."   This included the overhaul, the 160 HP STC, oil cooler, prop overhaul and re-pitch, engine mount overhaul, new alternator, new starter, new fuel and oil lines, windshield, copper cables, digital tach, digital OAT, rams-horn yokes, brakes, baffling, battery, etc.  (A&P labor is NOT included in that $23.5 total!)  Here are some photos from the ordeal...

Updated 12/26/03   Oshkosh 2003 Rec.Aviation "North Forty Party"

In 2003 Jay & Mary Honeck threw a Rec.Aviation get together at their campsite in the North Forty at Oshkosh 2003.

Everything went off without a hitch, and it was well attended. One thing we discovered, however -- you can't walk 10 hours in the blazing hot sun, eat sparingly, and THEN start pounding beers like there's no tomorrow!  Well, you CAN -- but not if you want to survive past 9 PM...  Before we knew it, the girls were dancing on the wing, and walking to Friar Tuck's had become a challenge!

Here are a few pix -- some sent in by attendees -- from that wonderfully crazy day:

John is a long-time contributor to the aviation newsgroups, and is one of the self-described "Gang of Fools" who are currently building fourteen (14!) identical Nieuport replicas in Independence, Oregon. (One of the photos shows the first completed Nieuport in flight.)  Until his Nieuport is finished he flies a club Cessna, which, he says, is also much more practical for flying Young Eagles.  See the December 5, 2003 issue of "GA News" for an article on John's EAA Chapter 292, or go to their website at www.eaa292.org for more info.

Bill has been posting on the aviation newsgroups for so long, that everyone knows him simply as "Badwater Bill."   He's even published magazine articles under that name!   Bill learned to fly in 1957, got his ATP in 1979, and has "spent more time at the top of a loop than 90% of pilots have in their logbooks!"    He's got around 10,000 hours, in "all kinds of crap -- mostly government cluges."  (Believe it or not, I have EDITED this gallery!)   As can be seen by these photos, Bill is one of a kind!

Updated 5/29/04    Pinckneyville 2004 -- An Annual Rec.Aviation Party!

Pinckneyville, Illinois has become synonymous with "PARTY!" when it comes to the rec.aviation newsgroups.  John "Highflyer" -- a long-time Usenet user -- and his wife, Mary, throw this annual shin-dig in their hangar, attracting pilots and enthusiasts (and, usually, bad weather!) from all over the country.

The first 11 pictures from the 2004 edition are courtesy of Dan Luke, who managed to dodge the thunderstorms and high winds in order to attend.  (Don't let those blue skies fool you!)

The next 11 pictures are courtesy of John Ousterhout, who attended with Stella ("StellaStar").  They beat the storms by driving in from Des Moines.

Most people coming from the north were simply unable to penetrate the stationary front that settled just to the north of PJY for the duration...   However, according to all who attended, a great time was had by all!

Looking north on the ramp as a Decathlon arrives to give us some laid-back aerobatics

Looking sw across the ramp to John's (Highflyer's)hangar. John says he got the handle because he never gets above pattern altitude

Jerry & April from Boston and John talk to a Quickie pilot about his bird.

The "Cadillac of the air" itself. John let Tina and me fly it: too, too cool.

"Not many single engine planes have a tire big enough to make a good chair," said Michael.

Stella & April

Stella believes that one MUST stay hydrated in this heat!

"That's "Nauga" Hyde to you, son!" With Sydney (Snowbird) and her daughter...

"By God, there'll be some changes made when we get organized!"

Another view of the group.

Michael gave Dan his first ME lesson in his bird. It's a real sweetheart, but his landing was, ah, "interesting."
