Thursday - Gettysburg Battlefield and Flying Into Dulles International Airport

Having arrived a couple of days early, we happily found ourselves with time to explore the area.  The nearby Civil War battlefield at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania looked like an excellent and educational side-trip for the kids, and we were not disappointed.

Later, after waiting out some bad weather in Frederick, we were ready to tackle the 20-minute flight into Dulles' Class Bravo airspace, and the Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) that the Feds have thrown up around Washington, D.C.'s critical airspace.

Here are a few pix from that day:

Becca gazing at Gettysburg battlefield where thousands died...

Bec, Joe & Mary at memorial...

Giant observation towers made viewing the battlefield easier...

On top of observation tower...

It's a small world -- 700 miles from home, we run into our nephew, Paul!

A giant, 100 year-old mural depicts the battle...

The North Carolina memorial -- one of hundreds throughout the battlefield

The Gettysburg Peace flame...

Tombstones in the cemetary where thousands are buried...

The wheatfield, site of savage battles...

At the site of Lincoln's Gettysburg address

Joe takes in the battlefield...

Nothing teaches history like seeing it for yourself...

Mary & kids in downtown Gettysburg, at hotel where Lincoln stayed...

Bad weather kept us grounded in Frederick for a few hours...

We weren't about to tempt those storms...

Finally the weather cleared, and Jay could taxi out to depart...

There's Dulles, ahead in the murk...

Closer now...

Wow -- that 11,500 foot runway is GIGANTIC!

Taxiing at Dulles is more like a cross-country flight...

Atlas parked at Piedmont-Hawthorne, a tiny canary in a sea of eagles!

Dulles' main terminal from our shuttle bus...
